The PJBT kicked off its 21st Season with a new unique event.  Most seasons, the PJBT kicks off its season with a major event at 222 Dutch Lanes.  This year the center is completing a remodeling job.  The PJBT held its first event, a 21 and under doubles event, at Colony Park Lanes North in York.  This Doubles event was sponsored by “Rotogrip Rick Mitchell.”

For our 21 and Under Doubles Event….the format was 5 Games of Qualifying for all bowlers.  After 5 games, the top 40% of teams in each division bowled another 3 games of qualifying in Round 2.  The scores from the first qualifying round carried forward.  At the completion of 8 games, the top 5 teams advanced to our livestreaming baker doubles stepladder final.  All competition for this event was conducted on the STONE STREET pattern from Kegel.  This event saw 72 bowlers –  36 doubles teams (17 scratch/19 handicap) compete.

In Scratch, Gene Blair & Troy Owens picked up the win.  Blair/Owens were near the top of the leaderboard all day.  They shot scratch qualifying games of 411, 443, 480, 424, and 480.  They led the field of 17 teams into Round 2.  In Round 2, they shot team games of 406, 473, and 364.  The last game of qualifying was their worst of the day…and because of it, caused them to lose the lead in the event heading into the stepladder final.  They were in 2nd place behind tournament leaders Antonio Willar & Ryan Mitskavich.  Blair/Owens began the finals in the semi-final match vs #3 seeds Brandon Updike/Anthony Remley.  Blair/Owens defeated Updike/Remley 220-194 to advance to the title match vs Willar/Mitskavich.  In the title match, Blair/Owens struck early and often…and never looked back.  They won the match 237-171.  For winning the event, Blair & Owens each won a $200 scholarship and plaque for their victory.

In Handicap, Connor Firestone and Scratch regular Darren Zombro III take home the title.  Firestone/Zombro III shot qualifying games of 349, 408, 414, 447, and 369 scratch.  They were in the middle of the top 10 teams advancing to Round 2.  In Round 2, they stepped it up and shot scratch games of 426, 413, and 450 to earn the 5th and final seed spot going into the stepladder finals.  In the finals, they walked the ladder to victory!  They first defeated Mason Moore/Daniel Eberle 162-161 in a close match.  Next, they took down Stephen Schaff/Alfonso Penna 233-200.  In the semi-final, Firestone/Zombro beat Carter Strouse/Jacob Gilbert 193-171.  In the title match, Firestone/Zombro took down tournament leaders Barry Breidegan Jr/Rebecca Breidegan 197-187.  The title match was fun for all four of them as all four bowlers bowl in the Lebanon area on the same high school bowling team!  Connor Firestone/Darren Zombro III each won $200 scholarship and award for their victory.

Thanks again to all 72 bowlers who came out.  No honor scores were bowled and 300 Pot carries over to next week.

Next week:  PJBT returns to where they normally start the season! Major Singles #1 at 222 Dutch Lanes in Ephrata, PA.  Sun 8/25/19 at 10:30am.  Signup in advance online under the event page.
