Lazarchick & Cepeda Win Old-School Shootout at Mountainville Bowl

The PJBT continued its 18th season with a trip back in time!  The PJBT visited Mountainville Bowl in Allentown PA.  Mountainville Bowl is one of the remaining centers in our area which has the old-school wood lanes.  It creates a new challenge for our bowlers to take on.  Wood lanes always react different than the new synthetic lanes of today.

On this day, we had 41 bowlers competing in this singles event.  We had 22 in Scratch and 19 in Handicap.  The lane condition for this event was house shot.  Format for the event was our normal 5 game qualifier, top 40% advance to bowl 3 additional match play games.  After 8 games, the top 5 bowlers competed in a stepladder final on our live stream finals.

In Scratch, Andrew Lazarchick of Brick, NJ, captured his 2nd PJBT title of the year.  Lazarchick had won earlier in the season at our first major of the year at Leisure Lanes (Sept 2016).  This was a great win and story for Lazarchick.  This win was Lazarchick’s first win since tragically losing his mother to a brain aneurism in November of last year.  There was tears of joy and sadness in this win.  Lazarchick started off qualifying with games of 204, 249, 268, 259, and 199 for 1179 (+179).  He was seeded 3rd entering match play.  The top 10 bowlers advanced after qualifying and the cut score was +37.  Lazarchick made his move in match play.  He rolled some big games and won his matches.  He went from +179 to +366 and had an 80+ pin lead on the field entering the stepladder final.  In the title match, Lazarchick took on Tyler Dautrich for the title.  Lazarchick started the match with strikes and made sure it was over early!  Lazarchick defeated Dautrich in the title match 248-187 to bring home the title.  Andrew won a $200 scholarship and plaque for his victory.

In Handicap, Jeffrey Cepeda of Reading, PA, captured his 1st ever PJBT title.  Cepeda entered the tournament with a 110 average and 81 pins handicap per game.  He shot scratch games of 137, 135, 141, 188, and 136.  After 5 games, he stood at 1142 (+142) and was seeded in 2nd place.  The top 10 advanced to match play and 10th place cut was +4.  In match play, Cepeda slightly lost some ground.  He didn’t win all his matches but did maintain a position of 4th place entering the finals.  He trailed tournament leader Ethan Matthews, 2nd seed Sarah Ornesky, and 3rd seed Jill Sprenkle.  For Jeffrey to win….he needed to walk the ladder in the finals.  That is what he did!  The road to victory was complicated.  He first defeated Jack Konrad in Match 1 189-181.  In Match 2, Cepeda took on Jill Sprenkle.  Their match ended in a TIE!  217-217….which then went to a 2-frame rolloff, in which Cepeda won the rolloff 55-37.  After that close match, Cepeda defeated Ornesky 215-140 in the semi-final.  This set up the title match of Cepeda vs tournament leader Ethan Matthews.  This match saw the lead bounce back and forth.  In the end, Cepeda squeaked out a victory over Matthews by the score 187-184.  Cepeda took home the $200 top scholarship prize and trophy for his victory.

We would also like to congratulate Tyler Dautrich who rolled a perfect 300 Game during Game 1 of Qualifying.  For his perfect effort, he won the 300 Pot for $95 scholarship.

Next Week:  The PJBT returns to another old-school wood center.  The tour rolls into East Lincoln Lanes in York, PA, for a singles PJBT event.  Sunday February 19th at 10:30am.
