Pretlow of Virginia & Russell of Delaware Capture Coveted 2018 Danny Wiseman Scholarship Tournament

The PJBT was honored to join PBA and USBC Hall-Of-Famer Danny Wiseman to help run his annual Scholarship Tournament in Baltimore, MD.  The 2018 Event saw us run a Friday Night Baker Doubles Kickoff Event where 15 teams competed for scholarships.  Then, the main event was Saturday and Finals Sunday.

This year’s event saw 305 entries compete over 3 squads.  Qualifying squads were 5 games.  Bowlers from each squad qualified into the 32 bowler bracket field for Sunday’s finals.  Sunday’s finals was a double elimination 32 bowler bracket, in which bowlers rolled 2 game matches total pins.  In all, the event gave away over $32,000 in scholarships and our champions each took home a top prize of $2400!

In Scratch, Roscoe Pretlow of Chesapeake, Virginia, took home the 2018 Scratch Title.  Pretlow guaranteed his spot in the event’s finals after shooting 1045 for 5 games in the first squad.  His score held up to be 4th seed of all 32 overall bowlers.  In the finals, Pretlow went on a winning streak and won the winner’s bracket.  He defeated Hannah Menetta (round of 32), Justin Bohn (round of 16), Kasean Waldon (round of 8), Anthony Neuer (round of 4), and Connor Brink (round of 2).  By winning the winners bracket….Pretlow became the #1 seed for the livestreaming stepladder finals.  In the title match, Roscoe Pretlow took on #2 seed Connor Brink.   Pretlow defeated Brink 201-189 to take home the coveted title.  Pretlow won a $2400 scholarship prize for his win.

In Handicap, Samantha Russell of Wilmington, DE, won the 2018 Handicap Title.  Samantha entered the event with a 113 average and 78 pins handicap per game.  She qualified on the 2nd Squad for the finals by shooting 1003 (+3).  She ended up being the #13 seed of 32 bowlers competing in the bracket finals.  In the finals, Samantha began by winning the Round of 32 against Maddie Gannon 431-361.  She then won her Round of 16 match over David Gilliam 405-393.  However, in the Round of 8….Russell suffered her first loss.  She lost to Amina Hall 427-417.  This moved Russell to the contenders or losers bracket.  Her first contenders bracket match was a win over Jasmine Bishop 408-388.  Her next match was to get her to the stepladder finals.  She defeated Juliana Kerrigan to become the #4 seed for the 4 bowler stepladder final.  Russell walked the ladder on the livestream to win!  She first defeated Amina Hall 156-153.  Next, she outbowled Anima Hall 145-127.  In the title match, she took on #1 seed Jake Diaz for the title.  She won by 30 pins 226-196.  Samantha Russell won a $2400 scholarship for her victory.

The only honor score of the event was bowled during Sunday’s finals….when Michael Mirabile rolled an 11-in-a-row 299 game.

The event game away over $32,000 in scholarships and will be managed by the PJBT Maps Scholarship Portal.  It was an exciting weekend of bowling and we look forward to seeing everyone return for the 2019 event next year!
