The PJBT continued its 19th Season with our 2nd Adult Junior Event of the Season. This week we traveled to Limerick Bowl in Limerick, PA. We saw 63 teams or 126 bowlers take on the Kegel Main Street Pattern for the event. We had 39 teams in Scratch and 24 Teams in Handicap. The format for the event was 5 games of qualifying. The top 40% of teams bowled 3 additional games in Round 2. After 8 games, the top 4 teams advanced to a 1-game winner-take-all shootout. The top team in the 1 game match got the title….2nd high team finished 2nd and so forth for the top 4 spots.
In Scratch, Joey Ocello got his 4th PJBT title of the season with his partner Eric Nilson. Ocello/Nilson was near the top of the leaderboard all day. Their qualifying games were 374, 434, 465, 448, and 487. They were seeded 2nd behind tournament leaders Troy Owens/Ben Rynes. Owens/Rynes were atop the leaderboard all day….with Ocello/Nilson on their tails. The 16th place cut for Round 1 was +101 for 5 games. In Round 2, Ocello/Nilson shot 481, 428, and 518 to maintain their 2nd place position entering the 4 team 1-game shootout. The teams in the finals were Owens/Rynes, Ocello/Nilson, Darren & DJ Zombro, and Bret Zirkle/Jacob Hawkins. The 1 game shootout came down to the 10th frame. It was clear that it was between Owens/Rynes and Ocello/Nilson. Joey Ocello needed to double in the 10th to win it for his team….he struck out! Ocello/Nilson defeated Owens/Rynes, Zirkle/Hawkins, and Zombro/Zombro 431-427-416-382. For the win, Ocello won a $300 scholarship and trophy while his partner, Eric Nilson, won a $150 payout and plaque.
In Handicap, Alex & William Cron took home the victory. Cron/Cron entered the tournament with a 341 team average and 53 pins handicap. Cron/Cron shot scratch games of 317, 351, 327, 388, and 370 during qualifying. This put the Cron’s near the top of the leaderboard entering Round 2. The 10th place cut was -59. In Round 2, Cron/Cron shot 320, 324, and 360. These scores helped them finish at -19 (3181) for 8 games. They were the #3 seed entering the finals. The finalists were #1 Aaron Robinson/Audrey Rodriguez, #2 Aliza Shirk/Jennifer Wagner, and #4 Caitlin & Tom Mattingly. This 1-game final was epic! All 4 teams ended up separated by just 11 pins!! In the end, Cron/Cron survived the three other teams and shot the high score. Cron/Cron defeated Shirk/Wagner, Mattingly/Mattingly, and Robinson/Rodriguez 426-423-421-415!
