The PJBT continued its 20th Anniversary Season with one of our largest events of the year….our Bowling Center Championship.  This 5-bowler team event is made up of bowlers from the same center across the northeast.  Teams compete to win scholarships and the winning team in each division earns a $500 donation from the PJBT to their respective junior bowling program.  The format for this team event is that each team bowls 5 team games.  Based on entries…the top 4 or 6 teams advance to the finals.

This year’s event saw 33 teams or 165 bowlers compete.  We had 10 teams in scratch (50 bowlers) and 23 teams (115 bowlers) in Handicap.  Scratch division took to the top 4 teams to the finals with 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 bowling each other in a 1-game match.  Winners bowl each other for the title.  In Handicap, the top 6 teams advanced to finals.  1 and 2 seeds got a bye.  We had a round one of 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5.  Winners bowled vs 1 & 2 seeds.  Winners then bowled each other for the title.  This event was conducted on a Kegel Challenge Pattern.

In Scratch, Howell Lanes #1 defended their title from last year….winning again in the 2018 edition.  Howell Lanes was made up of Justin Bohn, Tom Burns, Ryan Taylor, Joey Ocello, and Brandon Bohn.  They shot team games during qualifying of 850, 1003, 943, 938, and 907.  After qualifying, Howell Lanes #1 was seeded 3rd of 4 finals teams with      -359.  In the finals, Howell Lanes #1 took on Oakwood Lanes from New Jersey.  Howell Lanes beat Oakwood 1012-976.  This advanced Howell Lanes #1 to face Howell Lanes #2 for the title!!  In the battle of the same center, the defending champs came out on top.  Howell Lanes #1 beat Howell Lanes #2 1014-820 to win.  The winning Howell Lanes team all earned an individual $200 scholarship and a $500 donation for the center.

In Handicap, Jersey Lanes of Linden, New Jersey, were victorious.  Jersey Lanes entered the event with a team average of 817 and got 164 pins handicap.  They had scratch games of 744, 734, 817, 839, and 862.  They stood at -184 and led the field of 23 teams.  This earned them a bye into the semi-final round of the finals.  Jersey Lanes defeated Cypress Lanes in their first match 796-761.  This advanced them to the title match to take on Howell Lanes for the win.  The match came down to the final shots but in the end….Jersey Lanes outlasted Howell Lanes 802-787.  Jersey Lanes earned a $1000 total scholarship for their 5 bowlers….and a $500 donation for their junior program.

All in all, we gave out over $5000 in scholarships to our youth to over 55 competitors bowling.  We want to thank all 165 bowlers who came out and hope they enjoyed this unique team event.
